In a Hostile Work Environment, Be the Boss of You In a Hostile Work Environment, Be the Boss of You Sometimes we can find ourselves in a hostile work environment.    It’s important to remember that you should only do or say things that align with your chosen core values, whether those requests come from within, or someone else. When you find yourself in an unhealthy or toxic work environment, here are 3 quick ways to regain your autonomy, and ensure that you maintain a healthy degree of sovereignty… Acknowledge Your Feelings.  Check in and ask yourself if you are mad, sad, glad, scared, ashamed, or anything similar. If your dominant feelings are uplifting, you’re moving in the right direction. If you’re feeling consistently angry, sad, scared or ashamed, you’re probably living out of integrity with your core values, and trying to please someone else. Acknowledge Yourself.  You’re amazing. You’re an extraordinary human being…and sometimes you forget that. When you forget, you seek validation from others, and probably give up your power in order to get it. Acknowledge the gold you see in yourself, and remind yourself what you love about you. Soon you’ll feel more powerful and centered, so you can regain the reins on your life, and make choices that serve you best. Communicate Your Boundaries.  When your values are being compromised to the point of discomfort, unhappiness or resentment, it is time to set some boundaries.   When doing so,   communicate clearly, calmly, firmly, respectfully, and in as few words as possible. Do not justify, get angry, or apologize for the boundary you are setting. You are not responsible for the other person’s reaction to the boundary you are setting. You are only responsible for communicating your boundary in a respectful manner. You’re a powerhouse. Let the world know, not by dominating others, but by honoring yourself.

Challenge Mono-uni-task! Day 34 of 30 - When I Grow Up Yes yes, its Day 34 of 30. Whoever said that it takes only 30 days to break a habit is out of their mind. 30 days to shift their perspective, yes. 30 days to become more conscious (and conscientious), yes. 30 days to figure out how they can do things differently, yes. But 30 days to realize it, execute it, and do it oh hell no! Not to say that this challenge is worthless/hopeless. Not in any way, shape, or form. Since I started this challenge, I have: * recognized that my behavior was a hindrance and starting taking action steps to change this * came to terms with what is splitting my attention and took the temptations away * realized how much power I have just by being conscious of my behavior and really, truly concentrating on changing it * that slow and steady wins the race, and even if I cant be as slow as the tortoise I can still come out as the winner * didnt set goals that were too unattainable so that there is a feeling of accomplishment * researched and incorporated a new way of dealing with my ADD tendencies and become more focused. This has to do with a Moleskine notebook acting as my mindmapping catch-all, and Toodeldo as my To Do list. I know it sounds confusing, but its working for me so far. Once I work out the kinks Ill most likely do a post about it. So, the end of the story is this: realization, action, discipline, and focus are the major points to help you break any bad habit. But dont expect to be a new and improved person in 30 days. Its a good jumping off point to keep you motivated, but it wont be the end of the road.

Meditation Benefits Stress, Well-Being Improve on Vacation It’s good for the mind, body, and soul to escape with some relaxation on the beach. But you might want to consider meditating while you’ll away to give yourself even more of a healthy boost. Vacationers who meditate while on vacation may be less inclined toward depression and stress, according to new research from scientists from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai; the University of California, San Francisco; and Harvard Medical School. They found that a resort vacation provides a strong and immediate benefit to stress and well-being â€" especially when you meditate while you’re there. The research studied 94 healthy women, aged 30 to 60. Participants stayed at the same resort in California for six days; while half were simply on vacation, the other half joined a meditation training program with mantra meditation, yoga and self-reflection exercises. Researchers also studied a group of 30 experienced meditators already at the resort. The novice meditators, experienced meditators, and regular vacationers alike all showed signs of improvement in stress response and immune function during their time at the resort. Both novice and experienced meditators, however, showed these improvements much longer after their vacations ended â€" as long as ten months after the vacation. While the meditators showed improvements far than non-meditation vacationers â€" according to metrics like blood samples and self-reported well-being surveys â€" it’s unclear whether these enduring effects are due to continued practice or psychological changes in how people view their lives. The researchers also pointed out how “impressive” they found the significant changes in such a short time spent in a relaxing environment. “The benefit we experience from meditation isn’t strictly psychological; there is a clear and quantifiable change in how our bodies function,” said Harvard researcher Rudolph Tanzi in the news release. In fact, this and other research indicates that vacations have positive, quantifiable effects on productivity at the office. But I got something wrong in that article â€" I only wrote about why leaders must be readers. I didn’t mention that reading can actually be the tool that thrusts you into a leadership position. The Interview Phase: Read Everything You Possibly Can About A Company If you walk into an interview not having at least read the company’s website, then you’re toast â€" I talked about this a lot in my CAREEREALISM webinar on interview dos and don’ts. But beyond the website, you should read everything you can get your hands on about the company: Facebook posts Tweets LinkedIn posts Any articles written about the company in local or national media outlets Any articles written by the company’s executives Posts on the company blog Any whitepapers or e-books available for download on the company’s site I recently interviewed someone who mentioned something he’d read in two separate blog posts on our company blog and related the concepts in the posts to his qualifications for the position. It blew me away, and I knew he was worth talking to further. Before Your First Day: Ask Your Direct Support And Co-Workers What You Should Read Most likely, you’re not starting the same day you accept a new job. Use this time to prepare yourself for your role. You don’t want to jump in completely cold on day one when you have time to research. Ask your direct support and co-workers what books and blogs they would suggest you read to better prepare yourself for your first day. If they can’t think of specifics, narrow down your questions: Ask for articles on trends in the industry. Ask whether the company has any quarterly reports you can read that will let you know more about its recent activities. Ask your direct support what the best business book or article he or she has ever read is. Ask your supervisor if he or she has ever hosted company book clubs. If so, read the last few books discussed in book club. Ask whether there’s an employee handbook or a culture book that you can read prior to your first day. When You’re An Awesome Employee: Ask For Professional Development Resources Just because you’ve been with a company for a while and seem to have perfected your position doesn’t mean you’re done reading or learning. This is your opportunity to show your direct support that you’re ready for more responsibility. Voice that you’d like to learn more about your industry, your role, or other areas of the company, and look for resources that can help you do so. Read leadership books to help hone your management skills. Read business books â€" regardless of your position in your company â€" so you have a better understanding of the objectives of the business as a whole. Read books by experts in your industry. Read fiction books that will spark creativity and make you address problems from a different angle. Read articles that provide tangible tips for people in your industry. Recently, one of the most senior people in our organization told me that she needed more support and education. She said that she felt she needed to learn more in order to sufficiently train her team on some of the new services we were providing. I’ve never been more proud of her. We’re now working on a book list that she can start reading through, which we will discuss; we’re also looking for ways to further her education through workshops and conferences. Speaking up and indicating that you want to learn more doesn’t mean that you’re weak; it shows that you care enough to make yourself â€" and the company â€" better. Whether you’re prepping for an interview or a promotion, reading can give you the edge you need. You’re obviously off to a great start because you’re here reading this â€" go see what else you can do. You might just be a leader in the making. 3 Ways to Make Your ERG More Inclusive, According to Diversity Experts GALVANIZE 2018, a summit hosted by Fairygodboss on Oct. 15-16 in New York City, convened hundreds of executives and leaders of Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) with the goal of making womens resource groups powerful.It can be difficult to turn a general mission like empowerment into actionable steps, but two of the GALVANIZE panels What I Wish My ERG Knew and How to Deploy Your ERG to Make Lasting Impact tackled on the question of how, exactly, to make ERGs effective and inclusive.1. The main takeaway? Efforts need to be flexible and take into account the many experiences of being a woman.Programming under a single understanding of what a woman is and what she needs isnt effective, said Amy Philbrook, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Fidelity Investments. More is mora.Throughout the summit, several panelists echoed this sentiment, sharing how their companies have gathered womens unique stories to implement real , personal change.One mistake we made early on was thinking one size fits all, said Belinda Harris, President of Womens Association of Verizon Employees. Even though we were putting out all this content and opportunities, people werent engaged. Before you even begin to start a program, you have to consider, how do you put out a successful product? You understand the users. Put a prototype out, iterate on it, test it, implement it. Understand your target audience.Trying to put women all in the same box frustrates me, said Janeen Uzzell, a Global Technology Executive. At my company, we created a board of advisors of women from all levels at the company to share their stories and went from there to find solutions.Bethany Poole, Director of Ads Marketing at Google, said that she and her colleagues realized that silos existed within their womens organizations by listening to individual stories. Black and Latina women were notlage succeeding because they lacked mentors and sponsors. By ta lking to these women about the root of the issue, they realized they needed to break the ERGs silos.At an offsite, one of my supervisors asked people who mentored people of color or women to stand up, and not many did, Poole recalled. She said, next year, I want everyone to stand up. This exercise was powerful because it was public and it gave clear direction.2. Liji Thomas, Head of Diversity and Inclusion at Southern California Edison, agreed that an effective ERG requires courageous leadership and radical transparency. She said the company is looking holistically at the experience of underrepresented talent to understand what strategies to implement for their success.They have a womens roundtable that continues to be a great partner in this effort by supplying womens stories and opinions on diversity initiatives.3. Marcie White, AMS Relationship Director at HP Inc., backed up the idea that effective and inclusive ERGs are personal and practical. She said many companies focus on on e-size-fits-all resources for employees or fun perks like food trucks. But one of the most meaningful benefits she received was an executive coach, which she said is more practical than something like tuition reimbursements for women who dont want to return to school, whether because theyre further along in their career or have children.You have to make it personal, she said. We really invested in ERGs at HPE but you have to invest in practical ways to help people as theyre on the ground.Hayley Tabor, Vice President of Global Industries at Dell EMC Corporation, also recognized how important it is to consider the changing needs of women throughout their career. Taking input from women about what the issues are is important, especially as they become executives, she said.One of the easiest ways to make ERGs personal? Start small.Kathryn Montbriand, Director of Card Acquisition Operations at Capital One Financial Corporation, said local leaders should challenge yourself to make a chang e at a local level from buying books on the topic to give to men to inviting people from your branch to discuss equality.On a company-wide scale, Rick Gomez, Vice President of Human Resources at Xandr, also advocated for small ERG branches at ATT, for instance, ERGs are separate, registered non-profits. Gomez said this allows chapters to all have their own boards and bylaws, while also empowering members to donate to the cause.
