They then laid the tubes lengthwise in different layers and sections of the fiberglass, depending on the test.Ideally, the tubes should act like blood vessels throughout the body, says Koralagundi Matt, who has since graduated and is now work ing as a product engineer at Carnes, an HVAC systems manufacturer in Madison.The researchers then used a universal flexing machine and standard tensile tests to gauge the strain, stress, and other properties of the material.As soon as they heard the fiberglass crack, the researchers ended each test and examined the areas of stress where the glass capillary tubes also broke. At that point, the healing agent would seep into the cracks near the tubes, react with the Grubbs catalyst, and harden the epoxy.The researchers also built and tested a wind turbine prototype, using two standard blades and one embedded with the self-healing system. After stressing the blade and allowing it about an hour to complete the healing process, the material recovered about 90 percent of the flexural strength it had lost from fractures and other damage. Koralagundi Matt says that recovery was as good as or better than that of similar self-healing materials and could add years to the life of the blade.Still , adding the tubes reduces the fiberglasss average tensile strength and flexural strength by 25 percent and 9 percent, respectively, and Amanos team is now figuring out how to add more tubes to the material without weakening it, and how to make the blades easy to manufacture as well, says Koralagundi Matt. But with all the roadblocks in the job search, there are a growing number of opportunities for Americas returning heroes.There are fewer jobs, but there are more initiatives to hire people from the military, said Holly Mosack, director of military recruiting for Advanced Technology Services.Today, organizations are given federal tax breaks and other incentives to hire veterans. Also, more and more companies - including employment giants such as Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Waste Management - have targeted veterans in their recruitment strategie s.Mosack related that when she came home from Iraq in 2005 after serving as a captain in the Army, the private sector had done little to attract veterans into the civilian workforce. When I was out there, hiring veterans was more of an afterthought, she said. Even today, she continued, veterans comprise less than 10 percent of the workforces at the so-called pro-military companies. But shes happy to see more attention being paid to the problem.One of the men on the front lines of this trend is Michael McNelis, the director of sales and marketing at Training Camp, a type of private sector boot camp that teaches people information technology services that prepare them for high-tech jobs and certifications for Cisco, Microsoft and Comptia programs. About two years ago we got a lot of requests from veterans, McNelis said. He informed his company about the untapped potential of this growing labor source, and he said everyone seemed surprised as if they had never thought of it. Everybody looked at one another like I had 10 heads, he said.But Training Camp heeded McNeliss call to action and the company began targeting veterans with its Stepping Stone and Valor programs. Today, about 30 percent of the programs graduates are from the military.McNelis said that a veteran typically makes for a perfect employee because of his focus, attention to details and intense discipline. While he often comes out of the armed services with a degree of electrical and mechanical know-how, McNelis said hes extremely willing, and capable of learning a much more advanced skill set involving private sector software.As the wars wind down and troops come home, the demand for such training programs is increasing, McNelis continued, a pretty sizable increase over the past several months. Weve been working with a lot of vets whove exhausted their benefits.Other companies, colleges and government departments are offering varying programs designed at retraining and re-acclimating soldiers into ci vilian careers however, not all programs are accepted by the GI Bill of Rights. Why will you be screened out for salary? Electronic screening.The reason all the salary-related screening happens is that, given the electronic age, the volume of applications employers get for a published opening is enormous. It used to be in the hundreds, but now it’s sometimes in the thousands. People don’t have enough time to print and pore over that many resumes. It’s too expensive to pay personnel to do all of that screening. So, to whittle down those thousands to just 10 to 50 candidates to be considered for interviews, software is used. Software has no ability to think about salary or candidate qualifications, it’s “in or out.” The employer enters salary parameters and if you’re outside those, you’re screened out. That’s that.For instance, if you put a “0” when it says, “what is your current or expected salary,” the software will look at that, consider it an inappropriate answer and kick your application out. They can set parame ters for people who are looking for a $50k to $70k range, and if you’re over $70k or under the $50k range, you can be screened out and never realize it. Of course, anxiety is a normal part of the human experience, and it can be a  healthy, biological reaction to environmental stressors.The problem is when that reaction switches from one of manageable, temporary worry or stress to heightened, intolerable panic. The latter can interfere with work, social activities, and personal relationships. Here are seven ways to do it: 1.  Scattered countingCounting up (or down) to 10 is a great way  to handle anger, but it’s not as effective for anxiety because the process is so automatic. While we’re counting chronologically, our minds still have the capacity to ruminate on whatever is causing our anxiety. A better technique is scattered counting. Start with any number and then jump around - 14, 89, 30, 57, etc. It takes more concentration to come up with the next number when you have to think about what it will be, and this helps take your mind off the thoughts that are troubling you.2. Verbal interruptionThe traditional way to stop thoughts in their tracks is with a verbal interruption. This could be literally spoken out loud, if you feel comfortable doing so, or spoken to yourself in your head. Shouting “stop!” or “enough!” or “not now!” when your worries begin to take over, forces you to take a pause. This can be done as many times as you need to calm your mind.3. Positive self-talkIf your t houghts are particularly negative or scary, try restructuring them into ones that empower you. Instead of thinking “I’m so nervous about bombing this presentation at work,” try thinking “it’s okay to be nervous and I can deal with this.” Coach yourself through each anxious thought until your anxiety subsides, and then congratulate yourself on getting through it.4. What’s the worst that could happen?Anxiety often takes us to the worst-case scenario. We go from feeling nervous about a presentation at work to worrying about performing badly to worrying about losing our job entirely. If you’re able, imagine going to that worst-case scenario. What would happen if you did  lose your job? How would you handle it? What kind of plan would you make to revamp your resume, network with other people in your industry, and apply for new positions? Picturing yourself tackling the imagined worst possibility often gives us confidence that  even if  the worst were to happen, we would s till be able to handle it.5. Auditory distractionOur obsessive thoughts can be so loud in our head, and one great way to drown them out is by listening to something else. Put on your favorite song, your favorite podcast, or an audio book you find interesting and let the sounds coming out of your headphones squash the sounds of your anxiety.6. Muscle isolationAnxiety clogs our minds with unwanted thoughts and obsessions, and keeps us stuck in our heads. By feeling our body intentionally through muscle isolation, we can draw the attention away from our brain and into different parts of our body.First, sit comfortably in a chair or on the edge of your bed. You can close your eyes if that feels natural to you. Then, starting with your toes, squeeze and hold those muscles and count to five slowly. At “five,” release the muscles and feel your toes completely relax. Repeat this process up your body from your feet to your calves to your thighs to your abdomen, all the way up to your hea d and back down to your arms, hands, and fingers. An exercise like this relieves some of the tension in your brain by releasing it from your body.7. Meditation (It really does work!)Maybe you’ve had a friend or a therapist recommend meditation to alleviate anxiety. Maybe you rolled your eyes at the idea thinking that it would never work for you. Science has  proven  that it does! Regular meditation changes the structure of the brain and strengthens your ability to combat strong emotions like anxiety. Start by practicing mindful breathing for five minutes a day. You can picture your anxious thoughts like clouds, drifting by you, or like cars passing on the road. Over time, you can work up to 10 minutes, 20, or even an hour of meditation.When anxiety strikes, it can be difficult not to give in to the obsessive “what-if” thoughts that consume your attention. I’m not comfortable with self-promotion because we’ve all seen how ugly that can look. Self-promoters are the ones devoted to the advancement of their career, keep their mouth shut except when it serves them, avoid controversy, take credit for the successes of others, and distance themselves from their failures. Sound like anyone you know? Monkey see, monkey doI don’t mean to infer that any of my bosses were apes, exactly, but I was a quick study in recognizing the traits they appreciated in their agents. Those would be the agents that got the good cases that weren’t assigned to me. I suppose I could have pointed a finger and accused my boss of discrimination, but I’ve never seen myself a victim of my circumstances.Instead, I ticked off the mannerisms and characteristics of the agents who comprised my boss’s inner circle and made them my mentors. Most of them would puke if they knew I considered them a mentor, but I’m talking about the informal relationships where the agent was clueless that I parroted their leadership style.Not that I was a stalker; I actually didn’t like several of the agents who were outstanding at their job. I did, however, admire th eir work ethic.For example, John had a tendency to dominate every meeting or briefing he attended. Leadership paid attention to him and he was the case agent for many significant cases on the squad. John surrounded himself with other like-minded male FBI agents who ignored, dismissed, or interrupted others whose opinion they did not respect.Yes, I was marginalized. After all, most of the meeting summaries seemed to happen in the men’s room on the bathroom break.When I looked around the room, I saw that John and others of his ilk also ignored male agents who didn’t stand out as exceptional performers or leaders. While being a female agent may have had some impact on their behavior toward me, it clearly was also a matter of who was perceived to have anything important to say.How To Make It Work For You: Identify one or two people who have fine-tuned the desirable characteristics and traits you need to succeed in your environment. Don’t expect them to sit down and explain their m agic formula. You’re smart enough to observe what works and what doesn’t and then find a way to own it in a way that is unique to you. You may not find the perfect mentor who is competent, polite, and sees the potential in you. Demand more from one- find someone who can really teach you the ropes to skip and the ropes to know.2. Focus on your likability  John and his merry band of buddies laughed and joked around with each other but seldom smiled at anyone else. So, I began to smile at John every time I saw him and say, “How’s it going?” He’d always smile back but seldom offered a response.When we smile, we activate the  brain’s mirror neurons; our brain sees a reaction in someone else and it wants to mirror those same emotions. Smiling is a sign of submission, which is why many dominant individuals don’t smile. If the smile is genuine there will crow’s feet and the cheeks will push up.There are other ways to trigger a  likable  response from others. Our emotional limbic brain system leaks all sorts of information. When I approached John, his eyebrows arched which indicates genuine warmth. Few people notice this, but an “eyebrow flash” is an automatic reaction when we see someone you like.I knew I had made progress, and after a few weeks, John stopped and told me how his day had gone.People who get noticed by leadership tend to be likable.  Studies show  that we value an employee’s competence by how much we like or dislike that person. Likability is a huge indicator of success.Psychologists suggest that the biggest hindrance to likability is apathy. In other words, we don’t take the time to build our network. We think that relationship building takes too much time and too much effort to be worthwhile.How To Make It Work For You: Likability will make it easier for you to network in your office. Just because your colleagues as assholes, it doesn’t mean you need to be one as well. Start with a gesture: if you go out for a latte run, as k if you can get anything for your co-worker. Whether they want a latte or not, you’ve made yourself more likable with the simple offer. All it takes are straightforward gestures to make colleagues, and bosses feel more comfortable with you. Just don’t overdo it.3. Become a team playerI intentionally sought out John, and his buddies, to ask for advice about my cases. I buried my pride and made them partners in the direction I took my investigations. Since John and his friends had developed deep relationships, I suspected they would talk about me in my absence. It was important that I be perceived as a competent team player.Teamwork and collaboration is not always a natural response, especially if the person is new, or an outsider. We naturally tend to form safe tribes with colleagues we know and avoid those we don’t know well.That small but  powerful emotional limbic brain  is at work again. It’s job is to keep us safe, and strangers are perceived as a threat, at least at fi rst. Since the limbic brain is survival-driven, it tends to trust those with whom we’ve developed close ties or have shared experiences.There is no argument that one of the best ways to impress your boss is to be part of a team that unites, empowers, and inspires others. Effective teamwork requires a balance between the heart and the head. The job of every leader is to create more leaders.Once you lift up colleagues and enable them to find their full potential, you automatically find yourself a leader in your community.How To Make It Work For You: There are times when you’re the star of the show, and other times when you work the back stage props. Become alert to the needs of your colleagues and offer to help them. By the way, be careful with criticism and snarky comments. Stay above the fray at all times.4. Add value to the bottom lineJohn was a busy guy and very quick witted. I didn’t dawdle when chatting about a case- I came straight to the point with pithy, strong statemen ts. I didn’t waste his time by trying to ingratiate myself in a way that he would not appreciate.In our next meeting, the discussion circled around to a topic that John and I had previously discussed. He knew he could rely on me to be succinct and make an impact, so he asked for my opinion. I didn’t let him down- I made my statement and then sat down and shut up, not using this opportunity to make sure everyone else in the room knew how competent I was.That day was a turning point.While I have never developed a loud voice, I have developed a strong one.Leadership looks for people who create maximum workplace impact. Self-promoters tend to oversell themselves, and their talents, to impress their bosses. They’re more adept at blowing hot air than they are at putting their nose to the grindstone. As a result, they’re usually unprepared when an obstacle rears its ugly head.How To Make It Work For You: Remain alert for ways you can add value to the bottom line. Take initiative. I f a self-promotor is in over their head, bury your pride and offer to help out. Are there tasks that have remained on your boss’ to-do list that you could handle? Is there a task that no one wants to tackle? Put yourself out there to get it done. When your boss asks you to do something, respond with, “Of course,” rather than “Sure” or “OK.” It sounds as though you’re already doing it. Maybe you think that you’re all set- your old college photos have been deleted from Facebook and your LinkedIn profile is current. Or, perhaps you haven’t bothered to develop much of an online persona at all, so you think you’ve got nothing to worry about. Regardless of how your digital self can be characterized, you can’t underestimate the importance of it. The nature of today’s job search and recruiters’ tendency to take a deep look at a candidate’s online presence means that you have to be extra careful about what’s out there- and what’s not. The lies you’re telling yourself can actually mean the difference between a job offer and a rejection letter (and nobody wants that!). 1. “I Won’t Be Judged By What I Have (or Don’t Have) Online” We’ve all been told over and over to be mindful of what we put on Facebook. But, if you take that advice at face value, you’re missing out on huge portion of your online presence. When you Google yourself (most hiring managers will do just this), make note of which other sites link to your name. Maybe you’ve got an outdated (possibly embarrassing) Reddit profile or Pinterest page that’s you rather not have a future employer see. Now’s the time to do a thorough review of everything out there tied to your name. While you can’t delete everything from Google search like an online newspaper story that mentions your name, or a profile on an old site that won’t let you delete your account, you can at least be aware of anything you may need to acknowledge or explain to your interviewer like that controversial article you’re quoted in, or the traffic misdemeanor from nine years ago that still shows up.
